The newest reboot of Sailor Moon, Sailor Moon Crystal, is everything I hoped it would be and more! The new series follows the same plot as the first season of Sailor Moon, but the animation is much more modern and updated. The animation could best be described as beautiful! I thought I was going to be upset that Crystal is no longer using the traditional Sailor Moon theme song, but the new title sequence is so amazing that I don’t even care anymore!
I watched the original first episode after the first episode of Crystal so I could make a comparison. The main plot is the same – Usagi finds Luna on the way to school, Luna shows her how to transform into Sailor Moon. Usagi’s friend Naru is in trouble at the jewelry store. Tuxedo Mask helps her fight the villain, so on and so forth.
There are some small differences in the two episodes. Usagi falls down the stairs in her house, she finds Luna by tripping over her, and she has more friends at school. Major differences are her new transformation sequence. It’s much more detailed and elaborate, showing how much anime has advanced since 1992 when the show first aired.
I thought the first episode of Sailor Moon Crystal was nothing short of amazing. It made me nostalgic for being 13 again, when I first discovered Sailor Moon when it was on Cartoon Network. This episode reminded me of the best parts of being that age. If 13 year old Amy could watch this now, she would be amazed and speechless.
I can’t wait to see the other Sailor Scouts. It was hinted that we may see Sailor Mercury in the next episode. The first episode just premiered in Japan a few days ago, but you can watch it weekly on Hulu and Crunchy Roll.
