When I was a little kid, I used to idolize Belle from Beauty and the Beast. I didn’t think her captivity was all that bad, since she had the hugest library I had ever seen. I just figured she could spend the rest of her life reading and time would go by fast, right? Since I watched the movie on a daily basis from 1992-1994, I think a lot of Belle has rubbed off on me. Mostly the constant reading. I considered high school to be captivity, so I read books any moment that we were given free time to goof around. No one could bother me that way. When I went home, my parents wouldn’t bother me while reading because I would just say it was for school. Me and books have always been best buds, because lets face it, they are cheaper than games. So imagine my disgust when out of nowhere I realized that I couldn’t remember the last time I read a book without pictures. I read comics a lot and pretty much exclusively for the past six months. As someone who loves writing and wants to improve, this is no bueno.
That’s when I made the conscious decision to read books with no pictures, preferably fiction. I decided that the types of books that are going to get me reading again would be science fiction, fantasy, suspense, and horror. I’ve picked out five books that I would like to read as soon as possible. I chose to read Ready Player One first and I’m really into it so far. I think I could read it in a week.
Here’s my so-called Book Club schedule below. As I finish each book I will write a review.
1: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
I plan to have this read by 1/29
2: The Shining by Stephen King
I plan to have this read by 2/5
3: The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman
I plan to have this read by 2/19 (I’m giving myself 2 weeks for the rest)
4: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
I plan to have this read by 3/19 (I can’t believe I’ve never read this one!)
5: Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
I plan to have this read by 4/2 (I saw the movie but heard the book was better)
If anyone wants to read along with me book club style, then let me know in the comments below and we can discuss while we read. Does anyone else have this problem where they’re just not interested in reading anymore and need to get back into it?
Okay, I’m going to have to read along with you since 3 of your 5 books are already on my “to read” list and Hitchhikers is in my top 5 books of all time, but I’m way overdue on a reread. I’ve also been having trouble getting back into reading regularly. I used to blame “English Major Burnout,” but it’s been 10 years since I finished my undergrad and it’s getting pretty hollow as an excuse.
