I am very excited about this month’s free games from Playstation Plus and Xbox Live, although most of my excitement is because of Sony’s free game offerings. Let’s just say I’ve been dying to play Devil May Cry, which is free throughout January for Playstation Plus subscribers. I’ve had a Playstation 3 for a couple of months and the bundle I bought had a free year of Playstation Plus included, so I’ve downloaded tons of free games. I actually have more free games from Playstation Plus than I do physical copies of Playstation 3 games. Devil May Cry isn’t the only game to be excited about. Bioshock Infinite is also free all month long, and let’s be honest, it was my Game of the Year. I’ve had the game on PC since it came out, but I might still download it anyway, just in case I want to replay it on another system. Also, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is free, which is a game that’s been sitting in my Steam wishlist for awhile. It can only be played with a controller anyway, so this is a big plus for me to play on a console. Other free games include Don’t Starve for Playstation 4. I’m so sad that it’s not available on Playstation 3 because I’m dying to play it and I didn’t buy it during the Steam Winter Sale, which is over now. For Playstation Vita, you can download Worms: Batlle Island, and Smart As… In addition to free games, Playstation Plus members can also get exclusive discounts, most notibly this month is Terraria for $13.49 and Ethan: Meteor Hunter for $6.39.
Xbox Live’s Games With Gold is always quite disappointing. The standard Games With Gold deal is you get two free games a month, one is a full game and the other is an Xbox Live Arcade game. The two games for this month aren’t bad though. Sleeping Dogs and Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light are January’s free games. I wish I had known ahead of time that Sleeping Dog’s was going to be free, because I bought it on the first day of the Steam Winter Sale. I’m not really sure where my Xbox 360 is at right now, so I will not be taking up Games With Gold on any of their offers. The sad part is, this is probably the most valuable Games With Gold month so far. Generally, the free games offered are Xbox 360 launch titles, or games that were released within the first year. These are games like Crackdown, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Halo 3 – games that are in Gamestop’s bargain bin. That’s why I’m pleasantly surprised that Sleeping Dogs was offered up for free.
It looks like January isn’t a bad month for free games. As always, Playstation Plus is the winner.
